Singapore, February 21st, 2006 - Singapore Exchange Mainboard listed Stratech Systems Limited ("Stratech") announces today the launch of its state-of-the-art intelligent Airfield/Runway Surveillance and FOD (Foreign Object & Debris) Detection System.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation ("ICAO") upgraded FOD safety from recommended practice to standard in July 2005. ICAO Annex 14 Amendment No. 7 states, "the surface of pavements (runways, taxiways, aprons and adjacent areas) are to be kept free of loose stones or other objects that might cause damage to aircraft structures or engines." FOD includes a wide range of materials: a fallen part off an aircraft, a detached runway light fitting, building materials, rocks, and even wildlife. Currently, runway inspections are conducted manually and cause disruptions to flight operations. According to The Boeing Company, foreign objects on runways have cost the aerospace industry an estimated US$4 billion in aircraft repairs, flight delays and airport maintenance annually. The Air France Concorde crash in July 2000 caused by a metal strip on the runway clearly reinforces the critical need for a real-time, automated runway FOD detection solution.

Since launching Super BullsEye™, the World First intelligent Vision powered Weapons Scoring System at Asian Aerospace 1996, Stratech has emerged as a global technology leader in intelligent Vision, especially in the fields of automated foreign object detection and intelligent video surveillance for both commercial and military applications.

In a combat situation, runways are tactically cratered to disable retaliatory fighter aircraft launch. In emergency response, accurate assessment for Rapid Runway Repair ("RRR") is critical to the recovery of the damaged runways. The system launched today was originally designed and developed to support Runway Battle Damage Surveillance and Repair. With the ability to automatically detect runway craters due to battle damage, our technology has since evolved to encompass:

  • Intelligent Real-Time Runway FOD Detection
  • Automated Airfield Surveillance
  • Taxiway and Runway Incursion Detection

    Intelligent Real-Time Runway FOD Detection
Stratech's runway FOD detection system is a World First to utilize intelligent Vision to detect and classify foreign objects, with the ability to pinpoint the location of the foreign objects. As an intelligent Vision powered FOD inspection and assessment system, it also provides validation for millimeter wave radar, laser radar and other sensing technologies. This revolutionary system features self-calibrating cameras, automated scene analysis and configurable scan resolution for different object sizes. Providing continuous runway inspection in-between flights, it facilitates rapid recovery response through accurate assessment and real-time alert for FOD, bird strike condition, and battle damage surveillance.

    Automated Airfield Surveillance
Stratech leverages on a networked array of overlapping intelligent Vision and millimeter wave radar technologies to provide TOTAL automated airfield perimeter protection, and surveillance for runways, taxiways, aprons and adjacent areas. From a single central monitoring station, the system detects, tracks and identifies intruders and provides data on the heading, position and velocity of the intrusion.

    Taxiway and Runway incursion detection
To enhance the situational awareness of ground movement (vehicles, aircraft, and humans) on the airfield, Stratech's taxiway and runway incursion detection system provides enforcement of traffic movement in the restricted zones and low-speed zones. The system also provides advanced warning of violations, threats and intrusions on the runway.

"Runway FOD Detection, the heart of this total Airfield/Runway Surveillance System, has received in-principle approval for funding by The Enterprise Challenge ("TEC") of the Prime Minister's Office with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore being the piloting agency for the trial," said Executive Chairman and CEO Dr. David K.M. Chew. "The Enterprise Challenge is a government initiative that encourages and supports trial testing of innovative projects that can bring significant benefits to the Public Service. TEC provides trial funding and test beds for these projects."

"Moving forward, we are committed to executing our strategy of working with mega systems integrators to market and deploy our innovation globally," added Dr. Chew. "Given that the International Air Transport Association estimates that there are approximately 4,000 commercial international airports around the world, the market potential of our innovative solution is enormous!"

Stratech will launch its intelligent Airfield/Runway Surveillance and FOD Detection System at Asian Aerospace 2006 (Hall A, Booth 219).
