Shuttle Bus Commuters Will Receive Real-Time Bus Arrival Information

SINGAPORE, February 13, 2003 – Long waits for shuttle buses and uncertainty about when the bus will arrive will now be a thing of the past for tenants and guests at the International Business Park (“IBP”) in Jurong East. This is because a new intelligent transport system has been developed to predict the arrival timings of shuttle buses. Tenants and guests can find out when the next shuttle bus will arrive simply by referring to a travel information display located in the lobby of the buildings or look up the website and soon, via mobile phones and PDAs.

This new system, called SmarTravel@IBP, is developed and launched by Mainboard-listed, advanced IT systems and technology developer Stratech Systems Limited (“Stratech”). It is developed based on Stratech’s own travel information system called SmarTranz – the future of travel.

SmarTravel@IBP continuously locates and tracks shuttle buses plying between IBP and Jurong East MRT station using global positioning system (“GPS”) technology, which has been installed in the buses. The buses’ location and speed information is transmitted at regular intervals via General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) to a central server in the back-end. Based on the location and speed information, SmarTravel@IBP is able to predict the arrival times at the bus-stops. The predicted arrival times are disseminated over the Internet at Tenants can go to the website and check when the next bus will arrive just before leaving the
office. The information is also displayed on plasma information screens fitted in the lobbies of two buildings, The Strategy and The Atrium, so that tenants may wait for the buses in air-conditioned comfort.

“We are in discussion with other IBP building owners to set up information displays in more buildings,” said Stratech’s Executive Chairman, Dr. David K. M. Chew. “Our objective is to provide enhanced, efficient and effective intelligent transport services to all commuters within IBP.”

The IBP shuttle bus service, operated by Brickston Pte Ltd, comprises five buses plying between IBP and Jurong East MRT station. The frequency of the buses varies between 4 minutes during peak hours and 1 hour during off-peak hours. It serves an average of 1,800 commuters a day over 94 trips.

Said Ms Jenny Lew from Johnson & Johnson Medical, a tenant in International Business Park, “I am glad that SmarTravel@IBP is introduced. For many of us who are not familiar with the shuttle bus schedules, we can now know exactly when the next bus is coming. Knowing that also allows us to spend our time more fruitfully before the bus arrives.”

Remarked Mr Chong Lit Cheong, CEO of JTC Corporation, “SmarTravel@IBP's ability to provide enhanced, efficient and intelligent transport services will provide added convenience to our IBP customers and an additional fleet management tool for the bus operator. We're very happy to partner Stratech to test out this innovative product as it resonates so well with JTC's ethos of constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve its products and customer service. SmarTravel@IBP is not the first innovative project JTC is trying out with its partners, and it will not be the last. We're constantly on the lookout for new ideas and products."
